In recent years, football has unsurprisingly been amongst Greece's most popular sports. The ancient Greeks were huge sports fans. Every four years, the Olympic Games were held in the stadium at Olympia. The best athletes in Greece competed in different events that were a part of religious life. Greece has been represented in every Summer Olympics, along with just four other countries, Australia, France, Great Britain, and Switzerland. Basketball also enjoys considerable popularity in Greece.

Greek culture evolved over thousands of years, with its beginnings in the Mycenean and Minoan Civilizations, continuing into Classical Greece, the birth of the Hellenistic era and through the influence of the Roman Empire and its Greek Eastern successor the Byzantine Empire.
The country adopted the Euro in 2001 and successfully organised the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. The majority of Greek citizens (95-98%) are baptised into the Greek Orthodox Church and most celebrate at least the main religious feasts, especially Pascha (Greek Orthodox Easter).
Greece consists of a mountainous and craggy mainland jutting out into the sea at the southern end of the Balkans. Four fifths of Greece consists of mountains or hills, making the country one of the most mountainous in Europe. Mount Olympus, the highest mountain of Greece.
